On March 30, 2010, the President signed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 into law (the "Reconciliation Act"). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as the Senate bill, was signed a week earlier. The Reconciliation Act made changes to the Senate bill necessary to achieve passage in the House while avoiding a Senate filibuster, enabling the enactment of comprehensive health care reform.
