Cami Fergus is an associate in the Tax and Estates Practice Group, where she represents clients on a broad range of state and local tax matters.
Cami counsels businesses on the full range of state and local tax issues, including corporate income, franchise, sales and use, property, and other taxes. She regularly represents clients in the oil and gas, energy, maritime, construction, healthcare, and other key industries.
Cami advises clients at every step in the tax planning, compliance, reporting, and dispute resolution processes. In her counseling work, she has significant experience helping businesses break down complex tax issues and develop effective strategies involving apportionment of income and expenses, inter-company transactions, sales and use tax exclusions and exemptions, and other matters. She provides guidance on issues such as multi-state tax planning, nexus, and tax credits and exemptions. Cami also assists clients and industry groups in drafting tax-related state legislation.
When disputes arise, Cami provides broad-based tax-controversy counsel. She is routinely involved in the representation of clients in audits, audit reviews, and through every stage of litigation. Additionally, she helps taxpayers prepare and file voluntary disclosures (which can in some cases provide interest and penalty abatements), negotiates settlements with tax authorities, and, when necessary, assists in the representation of businesses at the Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals as well as in the state and federal court systems.
Prior to joining Jones Walker, Cami served as an extern for the Internal Revenue Service chief counsel and was a tax preparer for the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program. She also externed for the Honorable Robin M. Giarrusso of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court.
