Fred Helmsing is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group and a member of the corporate compliance and white collar defense team.
Fred concentrates his civil and criminal trial practice on three core areas: white collar criminal defense, products liability, and complex commercial litigation. With nearly three decades of experience representing individuals and businesses in federal and state courts and before government agencies, he has developed a keen understanding of the stakes facing executives, employees, companies, and other clients whose reputations, livelihoods, assets, and even freedom may be threatened by law enforcement investigations and prosecution and other high-profile disputes.
In his white collar defense practice, Fred has successfully defended clients against a broad range of allegations, including bank, wire, mail, healthcare, insurance, and securities fraud, and regarding conspiracy and criminal anticompetitive activity. He regularly represents clients in connection with governmental investigations, both civil and criminal, as well as internal investigations and audits designed to identify, correct, and — when appropriate — report potential wrongdoing. Fred regularly represents individuals identified as targets or subjects of ongoing investigations as well as key witnesses and other stakeholders.
In addition to developing and implementing effective pretrial, trial, and appellate strategies, Fred helps clients understand the stakes at play, familiarize themselves with the phases and processes of investigations and enforcement activities, and understand the risks and benefits of various strategies for potential resolution of such matters. With this knowledge, he and his clients can determine the most appropriate responses to investigations, agency inquiries, and law enforcement actions.
Fred routinely handles complex commercial litigation and helps clients explore options for resolving such disputes, including through mediation, arbitration, and settlement negotiations, in addition to formal litigation. He has prosecuted and defended a wide range of civil claims involving multiparty contracts, procurement, shareholder disputes, derivative litigation, corporate and partnership disputes, and allegations involving workplace safety violations, among other issues.
Fred also has extensive experience representing manufacturers, distributors, and other parties in products liability disputes throughout Alabama and regionally. These cases have involved a variety of products, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, medical devices and products, consumer products, specialty products, agricultural and industrial equipment, and toxic substances. He has served as lead and first-chair counsel in coordinated, consolidated, and multiparty proceedings argued in numerous district and appellate courts. In addition to his representation of individual clients and companies, Fred has written and lectured on a wide range of products liability issues.
