Hugh Warren is special counsel in the Litigation Practice Group and a member of the intellectual property team. He advises clients on patent prosecution and litigation, copyright and trademark registration and enforcement, and related intellectual property (IP) portfolio management.
Hugh draws on his unique combination of scientific, technological, business, and legal experience to provide effective, outcome-driven counsel to clients on a broad range of patent, trademark, copyright, and other IP matters. As a former electrical engineer for a Fortune 500 company — where he helped develop new product lines and implement state-of-the-art quality control procedures — and as the founder and owner of his own event-production company, he understands the power of innovation in driving business success.
Hugh provides full-spectrum patent prosecution counsel, regularly drafting solid, defensible applications that help protect and monetize inventions, open and expand markets, strengthen competitive positions, and minimize potential litigation, both immediately and in the long term. He has advised clients across numerous industries, whose products range from microphone and audio electronics and industrial equipment to sporting goods, media and entertainment, and consumer and retail products, among others.
With a view toward the full life cycle of his clients’ products and services, Hugh regularly conducts IP due diligence in the context of mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions and provides ongoing patentability analyses and portfolio management services. Highly attuned to emerging technological and legal developments, he maintains a similar level of innovation in his own practice, where he develops and deploys creative solutions grounded in industry best practices.
While earning his law degree at The University of Alabama School of Law, Hugh focused on business formation and other corporate issues and was a participant in the school’s Entrepreneurship and Nonprofit Clinic. In this context, he gained valuable legal experience providing trademark counseling and registration services while drafting organizational and operational documents for Tuscaloosa-area inventors and business owners.
