Phil Wood is special counsel in the Litigation Practice Group and a member of the energy and natural resources and environmental litigation teams. He represents energy clients in commercial disputes, with a focus on historical contamination and land loss claims.
Phil is a civil litigator with a particular focus on energy and environmental litigation. He represents oil and gas companies in a wide range of disputes, with particular emphasis on landowner contamination claims and public and private land loss claims. Phil also defends upstream and midstream oil and gas companies in landowner lease disputes, paying quantities litigation, Act 312 contamination matters, and toxic tort claims, among other issues.
Phil works closely with clients and colleagues at the firm to develop and implement effective litigation strategies from demand through trial and appeal, with the goal of providing the client with the best possible outcome while effectively managing litigation costs. Well versed in oil and gas operations and the state and federal laws and regulations governing his clients' operations, Phil aims in every case to develop a comprehensive understanding of the facts and legal issues in order to best meet each client’s specific goals.
Areas of particular focus in Phil's practice are fact investigation and case assessment, taking and defending expert witness depositions, defending his clients in corporate depositions, motion practice, and settlement evaluation and negotiations. Phil has tried cases involving oil and gas lease disputes and served as a member of the trial team in a multi-week Act 312 "legacy" lawsuit. Phil also advises his clients on a wide variety of discovery and e-discovery issues, from developing internal procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state discovery obligations to designing and overseeing large document review projects.
In addition to his civil practice, Phil has also maintained a commitment to the representation of indigent clients in criminal defense matters. While in law school, Phil clerked for the Orleans Public Defenders and represented clients as a student attorney for the Tulane Criminal Law Clinic, successfully arguing State v. Morgan (09-1395 (La. App. 4 Cir. 6/23/10), 44 So. 3d 292). Over the course of his career, Phil has continued this commitment by representing defendants in a wide range of criminal matters.
